Safety Month 2026

June is annually recognized as National Safety Month. Throughout the month, NSSGA will be sharing resources and content to help keep safety values front and center, as it is a core value of our members. This year, we’re focusing on risk management.

Risk management includes traditional understandings of hazard identification and correction, as well as a broader understanding of the behavioral aspects of risk and the importance of mental health.

Risk Management

Risk management is a continual process of identifying, analyzing and evaluation, treating and mitigating, and monitoring and reviewing risks. These resources address the entire process, outlining helpful frameworks of risk management.

Take Control: Prevent Serious Injuries and Fatalities - The Take Control program highlights 10 activities with a high potential to cause a SIF, then identifies high-risk tasks and associated critical controls to prevent a SIF. The program is intended to supplement existing training programs and put a spotlight on situations where miners face a higher potential of a SIF occurring.

Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs - This OSHA program walks through their recommended practices for Safety and Health programs, including hazard identification, prevention and control.

SIF Prevention Model and Guidebook - The NSC SIF Prevention Model is designed around the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) continuous improvement framework, with key principles embedded from Human and Organizational Performance.

The following sections target specific steps along the risk management framework.

Identifying Risks

Safety Month Webinar - The Risk We're Missing. NSSGA Members, register for this webinar, June 3 at 2:00 p.m. here. In this session, Emily Hargrove and Devery Youngblood explore how these issues are showing up across our industry, and what leaders can do to begin addressing them in practical, meaningful ways.

Mental Health - Man Therapy began as a suicide prevention campaign, and has morphed into a men's mental health campaign with the goal of supporting all men before they are ever in crisis. This website offers mental health resources, including a "Head Inspection" and a therapist locator.

Distracted Driving - Distracted driving is a risk for everyone who operates a motor vehicle, whether that's at home or at work. Considering 'distracted driving' a risk can help to change your perspective on this issue.

Mental Health - Like distracted driving, mental health is a risk that employers are facing. Protecting the mental health of workers and offering support can make all the difference to building a resilient and engaged workforce.

Analyzing and Evaluating Risks

Safety Month Webinar - What is Risk and How to Identify It. NSSGA Members, register for this webinar, June 10 at 2:00 p.m. here. In this presentation, Mark Savit of MSHAWise will outline the main categories of risk and describe how to identify and measure risks, as well as explore practical frameworks for prioritizing risks based on their potential impact and likelihood.

Addressing Distractions - Distractions at work pose a risk that we can identify, analyze and evaluate. This self-audit guide allows teams to work through potential risks in their facility by following a step-by-step guide.

Risk Assessment - This NSSGA resource describes what a risk assessment is, why to conduct it, and a matrix for evaluating how risky a hazard is based on the likelihood and severity of an incident.

Artificial Intelligence - NSSGA’s Director of Engineering and Technical Policy Hadi Rashidi wrote this white paper exploring the intersections between artificial intelligence (AI) and safety, including how industry data and knowledge can be used to protect people in real-time.

Treating and Mitigating Risks

Safety Month Webinar - Enforcer to Ally: Understanding How Humans Work to Build a Culture of Learning and Care. NSSGA Members, register for this webinar, June 17 at 2:00 p.m. here. In this webinar, presented by Rachel Proper of Caterpillar Safety Services, participants will discover that by providing a new understanding of human behavior, they can create an environment where employees feel safe speaking up, sharing their ideas, struggles and mistakes so the organization learns and improves the system continuously, making improvements in morale, retention, efficiency, profitability and safety.

Our Driving Concern - This National Safety Council program offers a collection of resources focused on safe driving. With micro-learning, self-paced programs and webinars, there are lots of resources about safe driving.

Risk Tolerance - This CONEXPO-CON/AGG presentation by Ami Gignac, GLC Minerals, and Katie Woodhall, Beaver Companies, covers the topics of risk, risk perception and risk tolerance, and factors that influence decision making surrounding risk in the workplace.

Hierarchy of Controls - This resource describes the hierarchy of controls, a method of identifying and ranking safeguards to protect workers from hazards. They are arranged from the most to least effective and include elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment.

Monitoring and Reviewing Risks

Safety Month Webinar - MSHA Resources: An Overview of the Educational Field and Small Mine Services and Technical Support Services. NSSGA Members, register for this webinar, June 24 at 2:00 p.m. here. In this webinar, MSHA staff will provide an overview of the Educational Field and Small Mine Services and Technical Support program area and the services they provide to the mining community.

Root Cause Analysis - These analysis tools and methods help to uncover the reasons behind recurring issues, prevent failures and improve long-term performance. These methods can be scaled and combined to achieve the right combination of techniques for lasting improvements.

Healthy Homes Checklist - This Department of Health and Human Services resource provides a checklist to walk through each area of a home and review potential risks.

Leading Indicators - NSSGA’s Director of Occupational Health and Safety Emily Hargrove wrote this white paper on the importance of monitoring leading indicators, proactive metrics that monitor the conditions, behaviors, and systems that prevent incidents before they happen.
