Dave Zatezalo, MSHA administrator, told industry stakeholders on a recent conference call that one of his main priorities for the agency is “fair and efficient enforcement.” Zatezalo will give a keynote address during NSSGA’s Annual Convention on March 7, 2018, in Houston.
Reducing injuries related to powered haulage is also a priority for Zatezalo and something that operators should keep in focus. He also said that he plans to update many outdated regulations, some of which, he noted, are as many as four decades old.
During the stakeholder call, Jeff Duncan, director of the agency’s Education, Policy Development group, pledged to improve the agency’s training and information on best practices. NSSGA has long expressed concern that while compliance assistance is critically important, operations deserve training materials that actually demonstrate valid, real-world compliance with standards. Joseph Casper, NSSGA vice president of safety, said that NSSGA looks forward to continuing to work with MSHA to meet this goal.
