Caroline Gerwig, a senior Mining Engineering student at the University of Kentucky, was awarded the 2019 Barry K. Wendt Scholarship in late August. Gerwig, who holds a 4.0 GPA in both her major and her overall academics, was chosen by a panel of industry judges for her strong academic record; interest in a future career in the aggregates industry; and involvement in the industry through her summer internships with Martin Marietta.
Gerwig intends to start a career as a mine planner and eventually earn her doctorate degree and teach mining engineering at a university level. “With experience and education, I will be well-equipped to prepare new engineers for the challenges they will face and … be able to ensure the aggregates industry continues to improve from one generation to the next,” Gerwig said in her application.
The Barry K. Wendt Scholarship is presented annually by NSSGA’s M&S Division to a student who plans to have a career in the aggregates industry. NSSGA will begin accepting applications for the 2020 scholarship in January 2020.
