NIOSH to Recognize Safety, Health and Tech Innovations

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will recognize aggregates operations for safety innovations. Operations that use technology to improve their equipment, programs and systems can apply for NIOSH Safety and Health Technology Innovations Awards.

In September 2017, Granite Mountain Quarries and Pine Bluff Sand & Gravel Company received the award for the stone, sand and gravel sector. The multi-operation company won for its innovative application of a holistic wellness program to improve worker and spouse health and fitness.

Luck Companies, based in Richmond, Va., received the award in 2014 for successfully modifying a Caterpillar 988G loader so that the operator could run the machine either remotely or traditionally from the cab.

Applicants can apply by highlighting the problem they solved with technology, how the tech functions and any modifications the operation made to customize the equipment to solve a specific issue.
