Quarries Receive Top Community Relations Honors & Stars of Excellence

NSSGA’s Platinum Awards of Excellence go to CEMEX and LafargeHolcim operations

The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) proudly recognized two operations for outstanding community relations programs during the 2018 Annual Convention in Houston.

FEC Quarry, a CEMEX operation in Miami, Fla., and Stringtown Quarry, a LafargeHolcim operation in Stringtown, Okla., each received a Platinum Award of Excellence.

“Quarries provide good-paying jobs in addition to producing the materials used to build local roads, schools, hospitals and more. A good community relations program is key to any operation anywhere in the country because it educates our neighbors about the value of our operations,” said Michael W. Johnson, NSSGA president and CEO. “The people at FEC and Stringtown Quarries exemplify what it means to not just work in a community, but to be a part of that community.”

CEMEX’s FEC quarry hosts the most tours of any operation in the East region, with the staff serving as excellent hosts. Businesses and civic groups can attend tours held on a regular basis, that features lunch and panel discussions. Local, state, and congressional lawmakers are also frequent guests at these tours in order for the team to educate them on the value of quarries.

Stringtown Quarry employees lend their time and talents to a number of projects in the community, including a county-wide Natural History Day event. Over 500 students and parents got up close to Stringtown’s quarrying equipment and learned about the industry. Employees gave more than 280 volunteer hours and 5,000 tons of road base towards constructing a bridge for the community.

Two Stars of Excellence

This year, FEC Quarry also earned NSSGA’s Two Stars of Excellence award. The association is proud to bestow a special honor for operations that receive two Gold Awards for either Community Relations or Environmental Excellence within a five-year period.

The quarry previously earned an Environmental Excellence Gold Award in 2017 and earned a Community Relations Excellence Gold Award this year.
