NSSGA’s Announces 2020 Barry K. Wendt Scholarship Recipient

NSSGA’s 2020 Barry K. Wendt Scholarship Awarded to Ryan Sibley

NSSGA today announced Ryan Sibley, a junior at the Missouri University of Science & Technology, as the winner of the Barry K. Wendt Scholarship.

NSSGA’s M&S Division administers an annual scholarship to honor the memory of Barry K. Wendt, a long-time division member who was known for his commitment to family, his community and the aggregates industry. The scholarship is given to a college student who plans to start a career within the industry. This year, a panel of judges from the M&S division awarded the $2,500 to Ryan Sibley.

Sibley, a member of Missouri S&T’s student chapter of NSSGA, is majoring in mining engineering and became interested in the aggregates industry after learning from his brother, also a mining engineer, about today’s mining industries. “I grew up not knowing much about mining aside from what the media depicted; typically accidents and the hazards associated with the field,” Sibley said. He learned more about the aggregates industry through his studies and a hands-on internship with NSSGA member Vulcan Materials Company. Sibley plans to build a career in the industry and eventually earn a master’s and doctoral degree.

Sibley attended the 2019 AGG1 Academy & Expo and NSSGA’s Annual Convention in Indianapolis through his involvement with his school’s NSSGA student chapter. NSSGA’s student chapters are important to help educate students on the realities of working within the industries and the good, safe, well-paying jobs it provides to the American economy.
