“Hole 1 of The Old White TPC Course is my favorite opening shot in all of golf.” – Tom Watson, Golf Professional Emeritus at The Greenbrier

Golf has played an important role in the history of America’s Resort. Greats of the game are legendary contributors but Sam Snead established The Greenbrier as the world’s foremost golf destination. Jack Nicklaus redesigned The Greenbrier course for the Ryder Cup, and Tom Fazio created an award-winning golf challenge for the private residential community, The Greenbrier Sporting Club. In 2010, The Greenbrier Classic was established as an official PGA TOUR site and solidified modern-day views that The Greenbrier Classic has become the must-see Tournament on the PGA TOUR. Our Course: The Old White TPC Course at The Greenbrier.

The Old White TPC Course celebrated its 100th anniversary and is one of the famed golf courses in America. The story of The Old White truly began in 1913 with an idea by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and a man named Frederick Sterry, the Greenbrier manager. Sterry reached out to Charles Blair Macdonald, the man now known as the “father of American golf course architecture,” to carve out a masterpiece from the mountains of West Virginia and in 1914, once rocks and brown stubble became an emerald green carpet known as The Old White. Sam Snead, returning from WWII duty in the U.S. Navy, renewed his position as the Golf Professional and celebrated the reopening of The Greenbrier with a tournament so successful it became The Greenbrier Open. In July of 2010, the best golfers in the world competed in The Greenbrier Classic, immediately making The Old White the oldest course on the PGA TOUR. The game greats like Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson and even Tom Watson have competed on this historic course. Join us at the NSSGA Board Golf Tournament and we will add your name to this list who love playing The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier.
