About Chula Vista Quarry

Throughout California, as sources of alluvial aggregates (sand and gravel) near depletion, mining is shifting to hard rock sources like Vulcan Materials Company’s Chula Vista quarry, which produces a very durable volcanic rock called andesite. Chula Vista’s unique andesite deposit can be used to make high-strength, high-performance concrete.

Since the 1940’s, rock from Vulcan’s Chula Vista quarry has been used to build some of the region’s most iconic buildings, highways and bridges, as well as military and commercial harbor facilities throughout the port of San Diego. The quarry produces a wide range of aggregates for concrete and asphalt as well as rip rap and railroad ballast.
