Gurley Quarry, a Vulcan Materials Company operation in Gurley, Ala., received the Platinum Award for Environmental Excellence from NSSGA in 2017. Staff from the quarry helped K-12 grade students from nearby Madison County Elementary School get some fresh air with an outdoor classroom constructed by the company adjacent to the operation. The area features amphitheater-style seating provided with boulders from Vulcan’s quarry operation, as well as signage indicating fossils and tree species around the field. Vulcan focused the construction of the outdoor classroom on promoting wildlife conservation and environmental education. So far students have built birdhouses, learned about geology and studied flora and fauna on the site. In the future, Vulcan will work with the school to expand trails around the area and enhance educational programs for the benefit of students. The Gurley staff built the outdoor classroom as part of their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship – in and out of the operation.
