Aggregates Production Up in 2016

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports that aggregates production is up 10 percent in the first two quarters of 2016 compared to the first half of 2015. An estimated 1.09 billion metric tons of construction aggregates have been produced this year, according to Crushed Stone and Sand and Gravel in the Second Quarter 2016.

An estimated 377 million metric tons (Mt) of crushed stone were produced and shipped for consumption in the second quarter of 2016. That puts the total for the first half of 2016 at 648 Mt, which is 11 percent more than the first half of 2015.

Production of construction sand and gravel in the second quarter also increased by 6 percent over last year’s second quarter. An estimated 269 Mt of sand and gravel were produced and shipped, adding up to 443 Mt so far in 2016, which is an increase of 8 percent from the first half of 2015.
