NSSGA learned last week that the House Subcommittee on the Environment and the Economy planned a May 29 markup of the revised Toxic Substances Control Act modernization bill entitled the Chemicals in Commerce Act. Because the draft bill does not directly address the minerals definition issue of most concern to NSSGA, the association did not take a position on the bill. NSSGA has, however, participated in meetings with supporters of the bill, because an amendment regarding asbestos is likely to be offered during a markup.
Late May 23, it was announced that the May 29 markup had been postponed and would be delayed until the week of June 9. Mark up of a bill by the full House Energy and Commerce Committee is not expected until late June. Senate consideration of the Consumer Safety Improvement Act, similar to the House bill, is stalled. Senate Committee consideration of the bill is uncertain.
