Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act (H.R. 2847)

Extends SAFETEA-LU through 12/31/10 and includes a supplemental $27.5 billion for highways, $8.4 billion for transit, $500 million for airports, and $11 billion in other infrastructure investments as well as crediting the HTF with $19.5 billion in lost interest on trust fund balances and allowing collection of interest on the balance going forward.
Passed the House 3/4/10 on a vote of 217-201. Passed the Senate 3/17/10 on a vote of 68-29. Became Public Law No: 111-147 on 3/18/10

Permanent Estate Tax Relief for Families, Farmers, and Small Businesses Act of 2009 (H.R. 4154)

(a.k.a. Death Tax Reform)
Passed the House 12/3/09 on a vote of 225 - 200. Establishes a permanent $3.5 million exclusion amount and a maximum tax rate of 45% for decedents dying, and gifts made, after 12/31/09. Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar 12/24/09. Further action blocked. Estate tax was eliminated as of 1/1/10, but will return to the 2001 level of a 55 percent rate with a $1 million exemption on 1/1/11 if no action is taken.
LIFO Repeal (Last In, First Out method of accounting) No action. No action. Submitted by President Obama in his budget proposal, but not included in either the House or Senate budget resolutions. Likely to be part of any tax reform package introduced in 2010.
