The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that it will hold a series of webinars to take public comments on how to implement changes in its navigation and flood control construction programs that were mandated in the Water Resources Reform and Development Act. The four webinars are scheduled for Aug. 13, Aug. 27, Sept. 10 and Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. EDT. Each will include presentations on different parts of the new law, as well as the comment periods. The agency also will accept written comments, but views the webinars as “listening sessions” to explain different parts of WRRDA signed into law by the president June 10.
The law authorized new projects and changed some rules affecting use of fuel-tax receipts from the Inland Waterways Trust Fund. It also sets a goal of capturing more of the annual harbor maintenance tax receipts for use on harbor dredging and other seaport improvements instead of diverting millions each year to other uses. Of particular interest will be the new rules that tighten Corps procedures for analyzing proposed projects and for meeting deadlines to speed projects along.
