HIGHWAY BILL SET TO HIT SENATE FLOOR DURING TCC FLY-IN

Please be advised that the Senate is scheduled to begin consideration of the highway reauthorization bill, S. 732, next week. Anticipating attempts to try to block plans to proceed to debate on the highway bill, Sen. Robert Bennett (R-Utah), Chief Deputy Majority Whip, filed a cloture petition on the motion to proceed to consideration of the bill today. So far, 17 Senators have signed the cloture petition. The Senate will debate the motion to proceed on Monday, April 25, and vote on a cloture (motion to limit debate) at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26. Sen. Bennett said that senators could expect a busy week next week with votes on the highway bill.

As the debate begins to move forward, an amendment will be offered by Sens. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) and Max Baucus (D-Mont.), the Chairman and Ranking Member respectively of the Senate Finance Committee, to increase the funding level of the bill, although the details of the Baucus-Grassley Amendment are not yet available. With the Transportation Construction Coalition Fly-In set for next week, our members will be key in urging their Senators to pass the highway bill and support the Baucus-Grassley Amendment to increase funding for Highways.

If you have not already done so, please register on-line for the TCC Fly-In. There will be on-site registration, but in order to receive updated information from the TCC, it is necessary to register prior to the event. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact Patricia Maeder at 703.526.1078.
